Hand in a Valentine, Melissa: Chapter 5

Hand in a Valentine, Melissa

Chapter Five (of 5): "The Bland Blend of Bad Boys and Bubble Gum"

Needless to say, I didn't die. But, boy, I sure wish I did! What really happened with the needle was that one of the nurses thought I was some kind of psycho nut-case and gave me a tranquilizer shot. I don't think it's really necessary to tell you how embarrassed I felt after realizing all the foolish things I had done... but I think that the nurse who gave me the shot should also feel embarrassed for overreacting the way SHE did.

Anyway, I thought I'd fill you in on what really happened to Jenny Park. It turns out that Jimmy did go over to Jenny's house that fateful morning. She actually invited him over in a foolish attempt to get him to change his nasty behavior. Jimmy thought that Jenny was coming on to him, so he kissed her full on the lips. Jenny didn't appreciate that at all and socked him right in his eye. Unfortunately, she broke her right hand and had to be taken to the hospital. When I asked Jenny about Jimmy, she told me that she thought Jimmy's beady little eyes were sexy! Puh-leeze. She was sure that, if given the chance, she could change him. Yeah, right! I don't know why some girls are attracted to bad boys. Don't they know that they can never change their bad boy ways?

Oh, I bet I know what you're wondering, "What about the hand in the box?"

The hand that was inside the Valentine boxWell, when Jimmy found out that Jenny broke her hand, he stole a fake one from a prop box in the school auditorium and placed it inside the Valentine box. I don't know if he thought he was being romantic, or if he just wanted to torture Jenny some more, but when he gave her the box at the hospital, she didn't react very well when she looked inside. She screamed real loud and threw her tossed salad at Jimmy's chest. She then smacked him in his other eye with her good hand. So, you see, it wasn't blood on Jimmy's shirt, it was Ruby Red French Salad Dressing!

After being belted twice in the face, Jimmy now stays far away from Jenny. However, I do notice him glancing over at Akiko whenever she's not looking. Now that I think about it, Jenny and Akiko do look somewhat alike. It makes me wonder if Jimmy actually likes Akiko and used Jenny as a substitute for her. Maybe that's why he picked on Jenny the same way he used to pick on Akiko. I'd like to know Akiko's thoughts on the subject, but I'm afraid she'd try to cause me bodily harm if I told her my "crazy theory" about Jimmy Hampton having a crush on her.

Speaking of Akiko, it turns out that she learned about Jenny breaking her hand from Tommy after I left them in the backyard. Instead of rushing to tell me before I got to the hospital, she took her sweet old time and let me make a complete fool out of myself. She did, however, give me some watermelon bubble gum since there was a hand (although a fake one) inside the box. The only problem is, I HATE watermelon bubble gum!

As for me, I had to do volunteer work at the hospital for a week because of all the problems I caused there. To make matters worse, my parents grounded me for two whole weeks without any allowance whatsoever.

Melissa enjoys holding Oscar's hand... for now at least! Not all things turned out that bad, though. I did receive a box of chocolates for Valentine's Day from this really cute boy named Oscar Perry. I remember back in the third-grade he used to stick gum in my hair all the time. My mom had to cut out huge chunks of my hair just to remove the gum. And you know what? It wasn't just any kind of gum. It was watermelon bubble gum.

Sure, Oscar still gets into all kinds of trouble, but if I became his girlfriend, I KNOW I could change him. Besides, I've had enough of mysteries involving missing hands. For the time being, I'd rather be holding hands with a cute boy instead...

...well...

…at least until a more exciting mystery comes along!
