Hand in a Valentine, Melissa: Chapter 2

Hand in a Valentine, Melissa

Chapter Two (of 5): "Theory of Relative Insanity"

Ten minutes later we slowed down in front of Jenny Park's house and headed straight for her backyard.

The storage shed in Jenny Park's backyardJenny was one of the smartest girls at Middleton. She was on the honor roll, played the flute in the school band, and took karate classes twice a week. She had never missed a day of school… until today. You see, Jimmy used to pick on Akiko until one day he suddenly stopped. After that, he started picking on Jenny. Jenny told me last week that Jimmy had been teasing her just about every morning as she was leaving her house for school. My theory was that Jenny got fed up with Jimmy's teasing and tried to fight him off in her backyard. Jimmy, in a fit of rage, cut off one of Jenny's hands with the ax her father keeps in the storage shed to chop fire wood. He then scooped up her now missing hand and put it in a Valentine box to keep as a memento. He must have accidentally left it in Mrs. Randall's classroom after showing it off to his sick and twisted friends.

"Melissa, that has got to be the craziest theory I have ever heard," Akiko said with utter disbelief. " And believe me, I have heard a lot of crazy things."

The problem with Akiko is that sometimes she can't see what is right in front of her face.

"We'll see about that," I said as I dragged Akiko into the backyard and looked inside the storage shed. "Ah-ha! The ax is missing!"

"Yeah, but if Jimmy cut off Jenny's hand out here, then where's all the blood?" Akiko asked rather mockingly.

Before I could come up with another theory, somebody snuck up behind us. It was Jenny's seven-year-old brother, Tommy.

Tommy stuffing his face with a candy bar"Why are you stupid girls here?" Tommy asked as he stuffed a candy bar into his mouth. "Jenny's not home."

"Where is she?" asked Akiko.

"She's in the hospital," Tommy said as he wiped his chocolate covered lips with the sleeve of his jacket.

"The hospital?" I gasped. "Tommy, did Jimmy Hampton have anything to do with Jenny's "accident," and did it involve one of her hands?"

"Hey, how did you know that?" Tommy asked rather surprised. "Because of Jimmy, Jenny is gonna have to learn how to write with her left hand."

My heart began beating rapidly. I could barely speak as I realized that I was right all along. Jimmy did indeed chop off Jenny's hand
like a crazed lunatic!

"OH, MY GOD!!" I finally exclaimed. "Tommy, did your parents call the police on Jimmy?"

"Why would they?" Tommy shrugged. "Jenny said it was an accident."

Poor Jenny! She was so scared of Jimmy that she couldn't even report him to the police!

"We have to find Jimmy," I told Akiko. "I bet he's hiding someplace, but where?"

"He ain't hidin' nowhere," interrupted Tommy. "Before you stupid girls got here, Jimmy was here. He said he had something for Jenny. I told him that she was still in the hospital, so that's where he went."

My heart began to sink into the pit of my stomach. I felt real warm as the blood rushed out of my head. Jimmy Hampton had something for Jenny Park, all right, but I bet it wasn't candy and flowers. He was going over to the hospital to finish the job. He must have taken the ax that belonged to Jenny's father so he could use it to silence her once and for all. Obviously, he didn't want Jenny to tell the real story of what happened to her hand. But he wasn't going to get the chance to fulfill his evil scheme. I was going to expose him for the cold-blooded psychopathic butcher that he was.

I quickly ran from Jenny's backyard and headed straight for the hospital three blocks away.

"Melissa!" Akiko yelled from the backyard. "Don't run off and do anything stupid before you know all the facts!"

I ignored her and kept on running. Akiko's problem was that she couldn't comprehend the danger Jenny was in. The time for talking was over. Now was the time for action.
